KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 9 (Bernama) -- International passenger traffic movements at Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) registered a 28 per cent growth rate year-to-date for the January to October 2016 period.
In a statement, Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) said the double-digit growth was a result of the consolidation of operations, which allowed greater capacity to cater to a higher number of passengers.
"Meanwhile, statistics had also shown that the airport had registered year-to-date total domestic and international passenger growth of 10 per cent.
"This strong growth was contributed by strong performance from a wide range of airlines primarily the AirAsia Group, Jin Air from South Korea, and 16 other airlines operating at KKIA," it said.
It said the Sabah Tourism Board reported 2.5 million international and domestic visitors to Sabah for the January to September 2016 period, a 5.2 per cent increase over the same period last year.
MAHB said KKIA handles an average of 180 flights and around 18,000 passengers daily, but during this upcoming holiday season the airport expects to handle about 20,000 passengers per day.
