LABUAN, Feb 14 (Bernama) -- A high-tech baggage screening equipment or baggage scanner will be installed on the arrival conveyor belts at Labuan Airport soon.

It will serve as a first layer of airport security checkpoint, said Labuan Customs director Dr Mohamad Saprin.

He said the installation of the equipment was also part of the department's effort to improve the hand luggage screening system at the airport.

"The machine, which will arrive soon, will be installed right at the start of the conveyor belts in the arrival hall of the airport and will be operated by customs officials," he told a press conference at the Labuan Airport here today.

Mohamad said the customs laws require the baggage of incoming international passengers to be put under the scanners.

In a related development, he said customs officers had been deployed at all strategic areas on the island to effectively address smuggling activities, be it by sea or air.
