SEPANG, April 10 (Bernama) -- AirAsia is the Official Airline Partner of the 29th Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) and the 9th ASEAN Para Games to be held from Aug 19-31 and Sept 17-23 respectively.

The events are jointly referred to as Kuala Lumpur 2017 (KL2017).

Chief Executive Officer Aireen Omar said the airline's sponsorship is from today until the end of the two sporting events.

It includes flights throughout the period of Southeast Asia's biggest multi-sport events.

"(All flights) are part of the (current) schedule. There are no chartered flights, but we'll ensure seats are available for those concerned to fly wherever they need to for the SEA Games and Para Games," she added.

She told reporters this after an exchange of documents between AirAsia and the Malaysian SEA Games Organising Committee (MASOC) as organiser of the KL2017 here today.

AirAsia joined KL2017 as a Gold Partner. The sponsorship category is from RM3 million to RM7.5 million, comprising cash and in-kind products or services such as flight tickets for sports and technical personnel who are involved in various activities such as the baton and torch runs of the KL2017.

Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin, who was also present said there would be some special livery on the body of aircraft to highlight the spirit of the Games.

Also the MASOC Chairman, he said the target for the KL2017 sponsorship is currently at 88 per cent or RM70.5 million of the total RM80 million.

"I think in the next month we will come close to the target as there still a few deals(sponsorship) that we have yet to finalise," he added.
