GEORGE TOWN, Nov 1 (Bernama) -- Qatar Airways is set to spread its wings to another 25 destinations by end of 2018 as part of its continuous global expansion.

Its Asia Pacific Vice-President, Jared Lee said Qatar Airways currently operates a modern fleet of more than 200 aircraft flying to more than 150 key business and leisure destinations across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia Pacific, North America and South America.

"We will continue to expand our routes by adding new exciting destinations next year, including Helsinki (Finland), Adana (Turkey), Sarajevo (Bosnia and Herzegovina), Prague (Czech Republic) and St. Petersburg (Russia)," he said.

As part of Qatar Airways' expansion in Asia, Lee said the airline recently announced additional services to Krabi (Thailand) and Ho Chi Minh and Hanoi (Vietnam), commencing December 2017 and January 2018, respectively.

"We will also be launching a service to Thailand's Chiang Mai to meet increased demand for Southeast Asian destinations from holiday-makers," he told reporters after announcing Qatar Airways' three weekly Doha-Penang direct flights via Boeing 787 Dreamliner from Feb 6 next year.

Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng was present.

Lee said the direct flights were scheduled for Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, departing Doha for Penang at 2.30am and arriving in Penang at 2.30pm, and taking off from Penang at 8.30pm and arriving in Doha at 11.20pm.

"This will be the second gateway into Malaysia after we'd launched a triple-daily service to Kuala Lumpur in December 2001," he said.

On concern over the ongoing the Gulf conflict involving Qatar, Lee said the airline is not flying to four countries, namely Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt.

"Other than that, it's business as usual for us. And as you can see, we are accelerating our expansion plan," he said.

In a statement, Qatar Airways said its revenue increased 10.4 per cent in the fiscal year 2017 (April 1, 2016 to March 31, 2017), revealing a 21.7 per cent year-on-year net profit increase.

In conjunction with the airline's 20th anniversary, Lee said Qatar Airways is offering a promotion sale of two business class tickets for the price of one and three Economy Class tickets for the price of two valid from Nov 1 to 10, 2017.
